[Abstract]

Strong demand by the public in recent years for scaling back on expenditures for public works projects has brought about a wave of rationalization in bridge design and construction. These newly designed bridges feature simplified structures, with reduced construction and maintenance costs. The Okawa Bridge is a hybrid rigid frame bridge which is an integrated combination of three main box girders and a bridge pier. By adopting this structure, the deflection of the superstructure can be restrained and earthquake resistance improved, which is structurally favorable. Also, it can reduce maintenance costs by omitting shoes, which are rational structures. On the other hand, in the case of rigid-frame bridges, we had to review various problems due to the composite structure of box girders and bridge piers in erection. This paper reports on the problems that were reviewed and the construction techniques implemented to achieve this construction.
