Hitachi Zosen Group Company Natural Energy Japan Completes Akita Biogas Power Station

Natural Energy Japan Corporation (Akita-shi, Akita; President Yosuke Ashina; NEJ), a Hitachi Zosen Group company specializing in biomass power generation, has completed construction of its Akita Biogas Power Station in Akita City, Akita.

NEJ is set to generate electricity from biogas produced by methane fermentation of food waste from Akita City, with an eye to contributing to the community. The aim is to recycle food resources and provide a stable, local source of power that is unaffected by the weather or the time of day. Industrial food waste, much of which is incinerated at present, will be collected, treated by methane fermentation to produce biogas, and converted into electricity.

The power station will take industrial food waste from hotels, restaurants, food processing companies, schools, and hospitals in Akita City, treat the waste to produce biogas, convert the biogas into electricity, and sell the electricity under the feed-in tariff scheme for renewable energy. The high-speed methane fermentation process is carried out using Hitachi Zosen’s proprietary waterless two-phase circulated methane fermentation (WTM) system for food waste. The project will generate about 5.23 million kilowatts of power and reduce carbon emissions by 2,544 tons per year. This is equivalent to power consumed by some 1,600 average households and CO2 released by 500 households.
