Hitachi Zosen Receives Order for Marine SCR System -First from South Korean Company-

Hitachi Zosen Corporation has received an order from STX Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (STX), a major player in the South Korean heavy industry engaged in the production of marine engines, for two units of a high-pressure marine selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system. This represents Hitachi Zosen’s first order from a Korean company for exhaust gas removal equipment compliant with Tier III nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission standards, which took effect in January 2016.

■Project outline
The marine SCR system will be installed in Aframax tankers owned by a Singaporean shipping enterprise, scheduled for production at a Philippine shipyard operated by South Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction Co., Ltd. Hitachi Zosen will deliver the system to STX, which was contracted to manufacture the engines by Hanjin.
Hitachi Zosen’s first order from a major Korean marine engine maker follows its first order ever, in February this year, from one in China.
Hitachi Zosen is a licensee of MAN Diesel & Turbo SE (Germany), the world’s leading provider of marine engines, and the company’s marine SCR system globally the only to receive first-time approval (FTA) from MAN Diesel & Turbo. The latest order suggests that the system fully compliant with Tier III NOx emission standards was embraced by the environment-conscious shipyard and shipowner and Hitachi Zosen plans to continue promoting its marine SCR system in future.

■Features of marine SCR system
The marine SCR system uses a catalyst to reduce NOx contained in the exhaust of diesel engines during operation. Hitachi Zosen is globally the only manufacturer of both marine diesel engines and catalysts, and through in-house production realizes an ideal balance between compactness of the system itself and of catalyst volume, and the performance of catalytic activation. The company offers high-pressure and low-pressure SCR systems for installation upstream and downstream of the turbocharger, respectively.

■Tier III NOx emission standards
The third level (tier) of controls set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requires an 80% reduction in NOx emissions from operating marine vessels compared to Tier I standards.
